There isn’t a bad time to visit Fredericksburg, but there are very different ones. Here’s an honest look at the Texas Hill Country through the year, including the bits nobody puts in the brochure.
Spring (March to May) — the busy, beautiful one
Wildflower season. Bluebonnets typically peak from late March into mid-April, though it swings by a couple of weeks depending on autumn rain. Temperatures sit in the comfortable seventies and eighties, everything is green, and the whole region knows it. Book early — spring weekends are the first to go, and prices reflect it.
Summer (June to August) — hot, and quieter than you’d think
It gets properly hot, regularly over ninety and often past a hundred. Plan around it rather than through it: mornings outdoors, afternoons in the water, evenings back on Main Street once the heat breaks. This is also peach season, roughly mid-May to early August, and the roadside stands along the highways are worth every stop.
The upside is that a resort pool and hot tub stop being a nice extra and start being the entire point of the trip.
Autumn (September to November) — our pick
If you asked us to choose one season, it’s this one. The heat finally lets go, harvest is on across the wineries of Wine Road 290, the light goes golden, and the crowds thin out from the spring peak. October weekends still get busy, but nothing like April.
Winter (December to February) — the quiet secret
Cold by Texas standards, mild by most others, and blissfully uncrowded. Main Street at Christmas is genuinely lovely, and January and February are when you’ll get the best value and the shortest queues at tasting rooms. Bring layers — Hill Country mornings can be near freezing even when the afternoon reaches the sixties.
So when should you come?
For wildflowers, late March to mid-April. For peaches and pool weather, June to August. For the best all-round balance of weather, wine and space to breathe, late September to early November. For value and quiet, January and February.
