For a few weeks each spring the Texas Hill Country stops being subtle. Bluebonnets come up through the roadside grass in sheets, Indian paintbrush burns orange between them, and half of Texas drives out to look. Fredericksburg sits in the middle of it.
When to come
Bluebonnets usually peak in Gillespie County from late March into mid-April. That’s a real range, not a hedge — the timing depends heavily on autumn and winter rainfall, and it can shift a fortnight either way. A wet autumn generally means a strong, early display; a dry one means a thin, late one.
If your dates are fixed, aim for the first week of April. If they’re flexible, watch the wildflower reports from about mid-March and move fast.
Where to look
Wildseed Farms, on US-290 just east of Fredericksburg, is the easy win — a working wildflower farm where you can walk the fields without trespassing on anyone’s ranch. It’s also open regardless of how the wild displays are doing that year, which makes it a safe bet.
Willow City Loop, north-east of town, is the famous drive. It’s a narrow road through private ranch land, so stay in your vehicle or on the verge, don’t climb fences, and don’t block gates. Locals are generous about visitors right up until someone parks across a cattle gate.
The 290 corridor towards Stonewall and Johnson City delivers without any planning at all. Half the best displays we’ve seen were from the car on the way back from a tasting.
Doing it properly
Go early. Morning light is kinder and the roadside pull-offs are empty. Wear closed shoes — the grass hides fire ants and the odd snake. And please don’t pick them or flatten a patch for a photograph; it’s a Texas tradition to sit children among the bluebonnets, but do it at the edge of a stand rather than the middle.
If you miss the peak
Don’t write the trip off. Poppies, coreopsis and firewheel carry on well into May, and Wildseed Farms plants in succession specifically so there is something in bloom across a long season.
