How to Get to Fredericksburg, Texas: Airports, Drive Times and the Prettiest Route

A two-lane road curving through green hills in the Texas Hill Country under a blue sky

Fredericksburg has no airport and no train, which is part of why it still feels the way it does. Getting to the Texas Hill Country means driving, and the drive is genuinely pleasant. Here’s what to expect.

Which airport

San Antonio (SAT) is the closest — roughly seventy miles, and usually a little over an hour by car. It’s a smaller, calmer airport and the drive out is straightforward.

Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is a little further at around eighty miles, and realistically an hour and a half once you’ve cleared the Austin traffic. It has far more flights and is often much cheaper, which is why most of our guests use it.

Our advice: check both. The fare difference is frequently larger than the twenty-minute driving difference is worth.

You will want a car

There’s no meaningful public transport out here, and the things you came for — Enchanted Rock, the wineries, Luckenbach, the back roads — are all spread out. Hire a car at the airport. Parking is free on the premises at the Haus and easy almost everywhere in town except Main Street on a Saturday.

The one exception is wine tasting. Don’t drive the 290. Shuttle and tour operators run out of Fredericksburg all week and will collect you from the resort.

The prettiest route

From Austin, the fast way is US-290 west the whole way, and it’s a fine drive that takes you right past the wineries on the final stretch. From San Antonio, most people take I-10 to Comfort then head north — but if you have an extra half hour, the ranch roads through Sisterdale and the Guadalupe valley are far better company than the interstate.

Timing your arrival

Check-in at We Wyne Haus is flexible — message DeLee to arrange a time that suits your drive rather than bending your day around a fixed window. Check-out is before 2:00 PM, which is unusually generous and means you get a real Sunday morning rather than a scramble.

If you’re landing late, the resort pool and hot tub are a few steps from the door and Luckenbach is a couple of minutes away. It’s a very easy place to arrive.

Check availability for your dates, and message DeLee once you’ve booked your flights — she’ll help you work out arrival timings.
