The Texas Hill Country catches people out. It’s hotter than expected in the day, colder than expected at night, and the weather can turn over in an afternoon. Here’s a short, practical list for a Fredericksburg trip.
Layers, always
A Hill Country day can start near freezing in February and reach the sixties by lunch. Even in autumn, evenings drop away fast once the sun goes. Bring a jacket or a good sweater whatever the forecast says, and don’t rely on a single warm layer for the whole trip.
Shoes with grip
If Enchanted Rock is on your list, this is the one thing not to get wrong. It’s a steep walk up bare granite and smooth-soled trainers are miserable on it. Trail shoes or decent walking shoes. For town, you’ll be on Main Street pavements for hours — comfort beats style.
Sun kit, taken seriously
There is no shade on the granite dome and not much on the vineyard patios either. Sunscreen, a hat with a brim, sunglasses. From June to September, treat midday sun as something to plan around rather than endure.
More water than you think
Carry a refillable bottle each and fill it before you leave the Haus. Texas heat dehydrates people faster than they notice, particularly if the day involves a tasting or two.
Swim things
Easy to forget on a wine trip, and a genuine mistake. The resort pool and hot tub are a few steps from the door of the Haus, and after a hot morning outdoors they’re where the afternoon goes.
A cool bag
Small thing, big difference. Peach stands, farm shops and winery purchases all benefit from somewhere cold to sit on the drive back — and Texas car interiors get punishing in summer.
What you don’t need to bring
Bed linens, towels, extra pillows and blankets, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hangers are all provided, along with a full kitchen, cooking basics, a BBQ grill and wine glasses. Board games too, for the evening someone inevitably wants one.
One last thing
Leave room in the boot. Nobody drives home from wine country with the same amount of luggage they arrived with.
