Most first-time visitors to Fredericksburg do Main Street, a winery or two, and Enchanted Rock. Nothing wrong with that. But the Texas Hill Country opens up considerably once you’re willing to drive twenty minutes further, and the landscape out here is stranger and older than people expect.
Enchanted Rock, done right
A pink granite dome rising 425 feet out of the scrub, about forty minutes north of the Haus. The Summit Trail is short but steep. Two things to get right: reserve a day pass before you travel, because the park regularly fills and closes its gates, and go early or late — there is no shade whatsoever on that rock.
Pedernales Falls State Park
East of Fredericksburg, the Pedernales River runs over great slabs of tilted limestone. It’s a beautiful spot for a wander, and the swimming area downstream is a proper Hill Country summer afternoon. Check conditions before you go — the river responds fast to rain upstream, and the falls area closes when it’s high.
The back roads themselves
The ranch roads around Gillespie County are the attraction, not the route to it. Willow City Loop, north-east of town, is the famous one in wildflower season. Any afternoon with no particular destination will do the job.
Dark skies
This is one of the better stargazing regions in the United States. Enchanted Rock is a certified Dark Sky park, and on a clear moonless night the Milky Way is genuinely, obviously there. You don’t need to go anywhere special — walk a little away from the lights at the resort, let your eyes adjust for fifteen minutes, and look up.
A note on heat and water
Texas summer is not to be argued with. From June to September, do anything strenuous before ten in the morning or after six in the evening, and carry more water than feels reasonable. The rest of the day is what the resort pool and hot tub are for — they’re a few steps from the door of the Haus.
