Fredericksburg rewards people who slow down. Two days is enough to see the best of it, as long as you resist the urge to cram. Here’s how we’d spend a first weekend in the Texas Hill Country.
Friday evening: arrive slowly
Get in, drop your bags, and don’t go anywhere. The resort pool and hot tub are a few steps from the door of the Haus, and after a drive from Austin or San Antonio that is exactly where you want to be. If you’re hungry, Luckenbach is a couple of minutes down the road — a general store, a bar and a picking circle under the oak trees. It’s the easiest first night you’ll ever have.
Saturday: Main Street and wine country
Start early. Main Street is at its best before ten, when the shops are opening and you can actually park. Give the National Museum of the Pacific War three hours if you have any interest in the subject at all — it is far bigger and far better than a town this size has any right to have.
Lunch on Main Street, then head east on US-290 for the afternoon. This is Wine Road 290, the densest run of wineries in Texas. Pick three tasting rooms, not eight. Book a shuttle so nobody has to nominate a driver.
Back at the Haus, the fire pit and BBQ grill are yours. Or, for a special occasion, add a private chef and let someone else cook and clear up.
Sunday: get outdoors, then go home the long way
Set an alarm. Enchanted Rock is about forty minutes north and the summit walk is far more pleasant at seven in the morning than at noon — and crucially, the park fills and closes its gates on busy days. Reserve your day pass before you travel.
Afterwards, drive back through the ranch roads rather than the highway. There is no faster way to understand why people keep coming back to this part of Texas.
What we’d skip
Trying to do the museum and Enchanted Rock in the same day. Both deserve better, and you’ll enjoy neither.
