“Book direct and save” is one of those phrases that has been used so often it has stopped meaning anything. So here’s a plainer version: where the money actually goes on a short-term rental booking, and what changes when you cut out the middle.
The bit most people never see
When you book a holiday home through a large platform, the headline nightly rate is rarely the whole story. There’s typically a guest service fee added at checkout — a percentage of the booking, charged to you, that goes to the platform rather than to the host or the house.
The host is usually paying a commission on the other side too. So the same stay is being charged for twice, and neither charge makes your weekend in Fredericksburg any better.
What that looks like in practice
On a typical Hill Country weekend, platform fees can add a meaningful amount to the total — enough, often, to cover a tasting flight for two, dinner on Main Street, or a shuttle up and down Wine Road 290. Not life-changing money. But money that could be doing something more enjoyable than paying for a search engine.

The honest caveat
Platforms aren’t villains — they’re how a lot of people find us in the first place, and if you’d rather book that way, you’re very welcome. We just think that once you’ve found the Haus, there’s no good reason to keep paying the finder’s fee.
