This is the reason the Haus has “Wyne” in its name. Wine Road 290 is the stretch of US-290 running east from Fredericksburg towards Johnson City, and it carries the densest concentration of wineries in Texas — dozens of tasting rooms strung along roughly twenty miles of highway, with the Haus sitting right at the western end of it.
Texas Hill Country is now one of the largest designated wine regions in the United States, and the growers here stopped apologising for not being California a long time ago. Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Viognier and Sangiovese all do genuinely well in this heat and limestone. Ask for those rather than the Cabernet.
How to do it well: pick three tasting rooms, not eight. Book the first, walk in on the others. Go on a weekday if you possibly can, because Saturdays on the 290 are busy and the tasting rooms feel it. Most open late morning and stop pouring around five.
Don’t drive it yourselves. Shuttle and tour operators run out of Fredericksburg all week and will collect you from the resort. Ask DeLee — she’ll point you at the ones guests come back happy from.
