“Everybody’s somebody in Luckenbach” — and the joke is that Luckenbach is barely anywhere at all. A general store, a bar, a dance hall and a stand of live oaks, with a population that rounds to three. Waylon and Willie put it on the map in 1977 and it has been resisting improvement ever since, which is exactly why it works.
Most evenings there are pickers playing under the oak trees behind the old store. No stage, no cover, no amplification — just chairs in a circle and whoever turns up. Take a cold longneck from the bar, find a barrel table, and stay as long as you like. The dance hall next door hosts bigger names and proper Texas two-stepping, so check the calendar before you go, because the good nights sell tickets.
Go late afternoon into the evening, once the heat drops and the picking circle gets going. Sundays are a local institution.
Here’s the part that matters for you: Luckenbach is the closest thing the Haus has to a neighbour. It’s a couple of minutes down the road, which makes it comfortably the easiest night out of your entire stay.
